Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 2 months since I added anything to this blog……and WOW, what a 2 months it’s been!
I finished NaNoWriMo and successfully completed the required 50,000 words in 30 days (26 days to be exact but who’s counting!). Anyway, I spent the next couple of weeks editing and rewriting the bits I wasn’t happy with. So, I had a complete novel…..now what?
I joined lots of writing forums on Facebook and read everything I could find on the writing/editing/publishing process. The only advice I kept getting was things like “put it aside and let it sit for couple of weeks” and “it can’t possibly be ready for publishing yet”. Then there was the “you’ve only just started writing, it takes years before you’ll be ready to submit to a publisher”.
To cut a long story short I was bored and frustrated. I knew the book wasn’t going to “improve” from sitting on a shelf for a couple of weeks/months. I mean, it’s not like it was a bottle of wine for God’s sake! So I continued to scroll through the writer’s groups until I finally came across a post that said exactly how I was feeling. I couldn’t believe it, someone else actually felt the same way I did.
I sent the woman who’d posted the comment a PM, thanking her for her post and telling her about my dilemma. And guess what? She was the CEO of a publishing company in the US and talked me into submitting The Children of When to her acquisitions manager! She’d never even read another I’d written. She just said “If it’s not good enough or not what we’re looking for, at least you’ll know why.”
The next day I bit the bullet and submitted my book to a publisher. On Christmas Eve I heard from the acquisitions manager. He loved it! They wanted to publish it!
Unfortunately, due to Christmas and all the other public holidays since then I’m still waiting on my contract. But it’s coming!
Soooo…..I’m going to post every step of the process on this blog. Ready, set, gooooooo!
